B u t this not being the case, each nation having its o w n standard of fineness, and its o w n particular coins, some having one metal a n d some the other, a n d some both, to constitute their currencies; a n d the coins of some countries being worn by wear and tear more than those of others, without being prohibited from passing b y tale, a n d there being in some countries a seignorage charged on the coins, whilst in others there is none, the subject is involved in an obscurity which very few persons are disposed to take the trouble to penetrate, and indeed which very few persons have the means of penetrating.

The same is true of the whale and other fisheries, wherein although the amount imported may far exceed in value the amount exported, yet no balance of trade is left to be paid, the difference being made up by the value of the labor expended by the crew, of the freight earned by the ship, and by the profits of the enterprise.
